Mark Oakshott, BA(Hons), PGCE, NPQH

Although both his parents were teachers Mark was not persuaded at first that this was for him.  He had studied law at A level and found the subject fascinating so he went to Sheffield University for a law degree.

However a few months in a solicitor's office indicated that law was not the career he wanted.  He spent a year travelling, working in Sydney for eight months and then exploring south-east Asia.

When Mark returned to his native Devon he helped at a summer school for primary school aged children and found that teaching was his true vocation after all.

He took a Post Graduate Certificate of Education and his first post was as a teacher at a middle school where he taught both Key Stages 2 and 3.  He had studied French as part of his law degree and passed on this interest to the children by taking them on several residential trips to France.   He moved to another school and was promoted to be part of their senior management team with responsibility for Maths, French and P.E.  Here he took the National Professional Qualification for Head Teachers (NPQH).

Being Head of a small school like Kingswear gives him the best of several worlds as he can spend two days on leadership and management and three days class teaching.  He is able to get to know all children and the family atmosphere provides a caring ethos for the pupils.

Mark is very ambitious for Kingswear School and is passionate about extending the opportunities for all children.  He wants to achieve the highest possible standards and started off very well with 100% pass of the Government Standard Assessment Tests at Levels 2 and 4.  He already teaches French to Class 2 (7 to 11 years) and has introduced a half hour of French for Class 1 (4 to 7 years) although normally children would not learn French until secondary school.

Mark has energy, enthusiasm and undoubted ability.

Mark Oakshott is Headteacher and Class 2 teacher on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. On Mondays and Fridays he attends to school management and administration matters.

He coordinates the teaching of numeracy; geography; history; physical education and health & safety throughout the school.

 Jessica Alford, BA(Hons)

Jessica studied at Roehampton University receiving her degree in primary education and including teaching in several London schools.  Since graduating she has been a supply teacher to a number of different Devon schools ranging from infants to year 6.  So she comes to Class 1 at Kingswear School with experience as a teacher already under her belt.

When asked that, with this insight into other schools, is there anything that we lack at Kingswear she replied that we have as good equipment as any including much larger schools.

She finds Kingswear Primary School stands out as very friendly and the parents, other staff and all the children have made her most welcome.  “The children want to learn and are beautifully mannered and always say please and thank you”.

Why did you choose Roehampton University?  Jessica replied that she grew up in a small village near Totnes and wanted to experience a totally different part of the country and Roehampton in London has a good reputation for teacher training.  However there is nothing to beat Devon so she came back here to work.

Class 1 has 22 children aged from 4  to 7 years.  This enables Jessica to group children according to aptitude not age so that the more advanced can be progressed through the curriculum faster to stop them getting bored.  On occasions some of the 7 year olds are asked to help the younger children which is good for both of them.

She is keen on PE and would like to start a netball team at Kingswear to play matches against other schools.  During her degree she specialised in teaching English which is ideal as reading and writing are so important in the early years.

Class 1's previous teacher, Sara Albon, has become head teacher at Drybrook Primary School in  Gloucestershire.  We are proud that her experience at Kingswear has enabled Sara to move to such a responsible position.

Jennifer Torpey, B. Ed(Hons)

Jennifer Torpey is the latest addition to our teaching staff. She trained at the Rolle College of Education, part of the University of Plymouth , and emerged from the four year course with a B. Ed. (Hons) degree.  Before starting at university she took a year out as a teaching assistant which confirmed her resolve to take up teaching as a career.  One of her specialities is music which is not surprising as she was a member of the Devon County Youth Orchestra and the Choir and also the Youth Choir of Great Britain.

During her university course volunteers were requested to

teach for a time in either the USA or Finland and Jennifer put her hand up for Finland not expecting to be selected.  She found herself in the small community Rovänienu in Lapland not being able to speak any Finnish with children with practically no English.  Now she speaks passable Finnish and the children’s English progressed amazingly partly because she kept slipping back into her own tongue and the children had to learn to understand her.  She still communicates with some of the children by email, she in Finnish and they in English.  She also speaks French and escorted the school on its visit to France last July.

Jennifer has had teaching practice in several schools in Devon and was very apprehensive to be sent to a school as small as Kingswear.  However she is amazed how well everybody gets on with one another with year 6 children happy to play with those in the reception class.  Liaison with the other teaching staff is so much easier too.  She is now an enthusiastic supporter for small family-orientated schools and applied for a permanent post at Kingswear when she graduated.

Jennifer teaches numeracy and literacy to years 3 and 4 and science, French, RE and music to all of Key Stage 2 children on two afternoons.  She also runs an after school music club.
